Job Description

The Data Specialist / Analyst supports our Energy Management Information Systems team with primary responsibility for the development and production of reports and graphics.  Secondary responsibilities include spreadsheet analysis, documentation of processes, and software systems support.  This is a "hands-on" position requiring solid technical skills, as well as interpersonal and communication skills.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing valuable analytics and data insights, the ability to solve complex problems, and careful attention to detail in support of our energy management and renewable energy teams. Our team uses an enterprise application suite of energy management and analysis tools as well as MS Office applications and data capture solutions.  Candidate must be capable of working independently and collaboratively.

Responsibilities Duties

  • Maintains data entry requirements by following policies and procedures
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related tasks as needed
  • Verifies entered data by reviewing, correcting, deleting, or reentering data
  • Review/create audit reports and resolves errors to ensure data integrity
  • Download/import data files; manipulate and analyze large data sets using scripting and query tools
  • Responsible for preparing, loading, auditing, and correcting data imports
  • Analyzing large datasets (delimited data, high volume pdf processing, large spreadsheets) and documenting issues/providing suggestions to management
  • Create, implement, and maintain data file structures
  • Creating and maintaining Kofax Capture batch classes and programming Kofax Transformation Modules Projects
  • Creating Excel VBA functions/ modules to prepare raw data for import and automate QA tasks
  • Authoring and maintaining XSLT documents to extract data from XML source files into comma-delimited file formats
  • Authoring and maintaining Access databases that track the lifecycle for data artefacts (receipt, loading, QA) and provides meaningful reports to management

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel and working knowledge of other Office products including Microsoft Access
  • Ability to maintain/modify custom scripts for XML data transformations (XSLT)
  • Experience with document capture and imaging software (Kofax 10.1/KTM 6.1)
  • Experience in energy/utility industry desired but not required


Daily Tasks

  • Running XSLT processor on daily XML files from BGE, DELMARVA, and PEPCO
    • Taking resulting .csv file and preparing for import into EnergyCAP
      • Preventing bills that would combine erroneously from doing so
      • Applying bill QA formula to check sum of charges against total of the bill
      • Mapping DELMARVA multimeter meter codes to their EnergyCAP equivalent
    • Resolving any import errors (account creation, meter code mismatch, etc.)
    • Running the appropriate audits post import
  • The process is in flux, but Potomac Edison bills are also supplied daily and then formatted with the aid of a macro enabled Excel workbook
  • Working EnergyCAP audits on bills imported

Bi/Monthly Tasks

  • Running XSLT processor on bi monthly BGE SUMMARY XML files and processing for importing
  • Processing/formatting monthly supplier files including vendors:
    • Agera (no imports have occurred yet, but process for import would mimic Constellation's)
    • Chesapeake
    • Choptank
    • Constellation
    • Easton
    • Mansfield
    • Trigen/Veolia
    • WGL Electric B&I
    • WGL Electric Summary
    • WGL Gas Summary
    • WGL Gas USM
    • WGL Gas B&I (hand keyed high cost bills)

As Needed Frequency

  • Modifying XSLT scripts when XML files change format/add charges
  • Creating and modifying Kofax KTM projects including:
    • Designing interfaces
    • Knowing predefined field types as they relate to EnergyCAP rules
    • Creating WinWrap BASIC custom validation scripts for data validation and QA
    • Configuring export connectors to match EnergyCAP requirements
  • Makes modifications to Bill Tracker (Access), including creating interfaces and writing JET queries
  • Using Excel skills, prepare setup spreadsheets to manipulate the EnergyCAP database in varying degrees of complexity
  • Running various reports from EnergyCAP including
    • Double Cost/Use Deliverable
    • Sales/State Tax Deliverable
    • Missing bill tasks
    • Wrong billing period applied tracking
  • Being general technical support to the team
